U controller should have at least 2 serial interface 1 PWM at least 64K rom and preferably 2 timers.
The Ucontroller should be working arround 25 Mhz max. should have at least 2 timers 1 PWm and 65K rom. 2 serial interfaces. 2 8 bit or 1 16 bit I/O port. ( parallel ) and besides that at leat 8 more I/O lines.
Microchip is probably your best bet. Not too many 16 bit micro's out there.
I am working on a project that needs 3 PWM channels that uses 8 bit timer, I bout the ATMEGA16 controller but that controller has only 2 PWM channels that uses 8 bit timer, so I bought the ATMEGA164, the problem I am having is to communicate with the controller using JTAG, I have the AVR Dragon, I tried to use JTAG connection but it didn’t work but when I used ISP programming method it worked but I cant debug the controller even though the ATMEGA164 has 16K byte flash memory.
What should I do? I don’t want to buy an expensive debugger
Is there a way I can do with the fuses to get the JTAG working?

The number one problem I have encountered in using JTAG ISP with a new design is the circuit loading down the JTAG pins. Try inserting 100 ohm resistors in series with the JTAG pins. JTAG connection are then made between the resistor and the ATmega pin.
2nd you need to provide power to your circuit do not rely upon the JTAG connector to provide power. Infact you may also want to use an external power supply on the Dragon board as well as some USB ports don't supply enough power.
3rd Power fluxuations can cause inadvertant fuse settings. Most notable is having a CLOCK fuse change from an internal RC to an external. THis effectively kills the chip and requires inserting the chip into an emulator like and STK500 with High Voltage programming mode to reset the fuses. You may be able to do this with the dragon.
4. Improperly leaving DEBUG mode will leave the chip with DW wire asserted again effectively killing the JTAG. This happens if you disconnect from teh system beofre terminating DEBUG communications from with Studio 4.
I used the JTAGICEmkii and when this happened I ran a DOS command to the emmulator that reset teh DW wire. You will have to look for this in the instrustions of contact an Atmel rep to see if this is available in the DRAGON.
You place the command string in a batch file and run it to restor debug communication then you can properly shutdown debug communication in Studio 4 .
